SEPA Ensures Safe Disposal of Industrial Toxic Waste.

Naeem Ahmed Mughal, the Director General of the Sindh Environmental Protection Agency (SEPA), conducted inspection of the Incineration Plant operated by M/s Global Environmental Labs, situated in District Korangi, Karachi. This visit exemplifies SEPA's commitment to ensuring the safe and environment friendly disposal of various types of industrial toxic waste. The objectives of the visit was vigilant check on the waste management mechanism adopted in all incinerations plants which includes

  • Assess the functionality and efficiency of Incineration Plant
  • Review and update the standard operating procedures (SOPs) pertaining to the treatment and disposal of industrial hazardous waste and Hospital infectious waste.
  • To scrutinize and maintain detailed records of waste collection, transportation, storage, handling, and disposal mechanisms.
  • To document item-wise types and quantities of waste collected from industrial units, warehouses, and other facilities.
  • To verify compliance with environmental regulations and safety standards.

Accompanied by a team of officers, Director General Mughal embarked on this visit with the aim of closely examining and evaluating the facility's operational processes, emissions control systems, incineration plant's technology and equipment utilized for waste disposal, the facility's air and water quality monitoring systems, engaged in discussions with plant personnel regarding safety protocols and emergency response plans and overall adherence to environmental guidelines.

SEPA remains unwavering in its mission to safeguard the environment and promote sustainable waste management practices. The recent visit by Director General Mughal underscores the agency's dedication to transparency, collaboration, and the stringent enforcement of regulations within the field of waste management.

SEPA has already advised to industrial/manufacturing plants to ensure transparency in safe disposal of hazardous waste. Any negligence in this context may lead to leaks in disposal practices and sale of expired or components of waste in the market particularly in remote areas causing health issues in general public due to residual toxic substances of all types of hazardous waste.
