Karachi (21 April): On the occasion of World Earth Day, the Sindh Environmental Protection Agency (SEPA), in collaboration with Karachi Veterans Football Unity, successfully organized a grand Veterans Football Tournament at Baloch Football Stadium, Korangi. The grand final of the tournament, which had been continuing since April 18, was held in a festive atmosphere and witnessed a large turnout of football fans, citizens, former players, and young participants.
Director General SEPA, Waqar Hussain Phulpoto, attended the final as the chief guest. He met the players, watched the final match, and distributed trophies and prizes among the winning team. On the occasion, special messages were conveyed inside the stadium highlighting the importance of environmental protection, promotion of sports, and the establishment of a healthy society.

Addressing the ceremony, DG SEPA Waqar Hussain Phulpoto said that World Earth Day reminds us that the protection of land, water, air, and natural resources is a collective responsibility of all. He said the Sindh government is pursuing environment-friendly policies, while SEPA is actively engaging the public through awareness programmes, tree plantation drives, seminars, and sports activities.

He further said that sports play an important role in guiding youth towards positive activities and help promote unity, discipline, and a healthy mindset in society. He stressed that a clean environment is the fundamental right of every citizen and that alongside the government, the public must also play its due role in combating pollution.

DG SEPA also announced that this year World Earth Day will be observed in a more impactful and well-organized manner. The activities will begin with a tree plantation drive, followed by seminars and webinars in various universities and educational institutions.

He added that under the Vehicular Emission Control Programme, vehicle fitness checks will be carried out tomorrow at 6:00 pm at Metropole in Karachi, while smoke-emitting and unfit vehicles will face legal action and challans in coordination with traffic police.

Citizens were urged by the DG to plant trees, avoid water wastage, reduce the use of plastic, and maintain cleanliness in their surroundings.
At the conclusion of the event, Karachi Veterans Football Unity and the organizers were appreciated for successfully conducting the tournament, while participants welcomed SEPA’s initiative, calling it a positive step towards promoting environmental awareness on World Earth Day.
