Implementation of ban on plastic bags across Sindh: SEPA teams in the field

Karachi, June 19, 2025: To ensure the effective implementation of the complete ban on all types of plastic bags in Sindh, the district monitoring teams of the Sindh Environmental Protection Agency (SEPA) were active in the markets across the province today. The teams went shop to shop throughout the day to formally receive the ban orders from the shopkeepers and strongly urged them that in case of violation in the next visit, legal action would be taken under the Sindh Environmental Protection Act.

Since SEPA’s district headquarters is in Karachi, the implementation of the ban in all the districts of the city was monitored moment by moment. The monitoring team of Keamari district visited the markets of Shershah and Metroul, while the team of Sharqi district was active in Garden and Scheme 33. The team of Malir district reviewed the areas of Landhi and Manzil Pump, and two well-known superstores and bag-making factories were inspected in Korangi district. The Central District team was active in Federal B Area and Goal Market, while the South District team visited Ocean Mall and the West District team visited markets in the suburbs.

On this occasion, DG SEPA Waqar Hussain Phulpoto, in a message, asked the staff and officers to ensure the implementation of this ban with determination. He further stressed that in case of any kind of resistance, understanding should be used, because sometimes short-sightedness tries to get in the way of long-term benefits. However, he clarified that persistent people connected to their goal always continue their efforts for improvement.

It should be noted that the Sindh government had imposed a ban on the manufacture, purchase, sale and use of all types of plastic bags across the province for a period of two months two months ago, which has come into effect in the entire province from June 15. SEPA monitoring teams are determined to ensure the effective implementation of this ban across the province.
