SEPA celebrates Environment Week on the Golden Jubilee of World Environment Day

Karachi: On the occasion of the 50th anniversary of World Environment Day, which is celebrated every year on June 5 all over the world, this year the Sindh Environmental Protection Agency (SEPA) is celebrating Environment Week, under which colorful events are being organized throughout the province to raise environmental awareness among the public throughout the week. It may be recalled that Environment Day was first celebrated all over the world in 1972 under the flag of the United Nations.
After approving the Environment Week on Tuesday, Director General of SEPA Naeem Ahmed Mughal said in a statement that instructions have been given to regional offices of SEPA across the province to celebrate the Environment Week in a grand manner, while the heads of all relevant departments at the government level as well as the district administrations across the province have also been requested to celebrate this day at their respective levels. In addition, various industrial and trade associations have also been asked in writing to raise environmental awareness on this occasion within their respective jurisdictions.
In this regard, under SEPA, a one-day training workshop is being organized for journalists in Karachi on Wednesday in collaboration with the Karachi Press Club, a representative organization of environmental journalists, Green Media Initiative, in which women journalists will be given practical training in reporting on climate change.
Similarly, an awareness campaign is being launched against smoke-emitting vehicles in all districts of Karachi on Friday, June 3. Under which, SEPA officials and volunteers will distribute pamphlets to vehicle owners and drivers on twenty busy highways of Karachi, in which they have been informed about the harm caused by vehicle smoke and methods of preventing it.
On Saturday, June 4, an awareness walk and tree plantation are being conducted from Clock Tower (Village) to Emaar in collaboration with DHA.
On Sunday, June 5, two rallies of 100 cyclists will be organized at 7 am in collaboration with the Karachi Cyclist Association, the first of which will start at 7 am from Fayyaz Center opposite FTC Building and the second rally will start at 7 am from Sakhi Hassan and will pass through different routes to inform the public about the benefits of minimum carbon emissions and both rallies will end at the Quaid's Mausoleum.
On Sunday, June 5, at 11 am, the Arts Council of Pakistan is organizing a climate festival in Karachi in collaboration with environmental publishing house Forozan Pakistan. First, an awareness seminar on this year’s World Environment Day, titled “Only One Earth,” will be held at 11 am. This will be followed by a stage play on climate change, and finally, the famous musical band Oj will perform environmental songs.
An awareness campaign is also being run through video clips of environmental messages on SEPA’s Facebook page and Twitter account from June 1.
In addition, all regional offices of SEPA will organize awareness walks, tree plantation campaigns, seminars and other awareness activities in all major cities of the province.
Director General of CEPA, Naeem Ahmed Mughal, has appealed to the staff and officers of all private and government institutions, as well as the administration and representatives of non-governmental organizations, media, civil society, and educational institutions, to support CEPA and create environmental awareness among the public on the occasion of World Environment Day so that individual environmental responsibilities can be better fulfilled.
